Liberated scraps! Yum!

This is going to be a crib quilt for a dear friend of mine who's just given birth to a beautiful baby girl.

I couldn't get enough of this block, having recently made a table runner using the same one (see post below).  I have used scraps of Michael Miller, Denyse Schmidt and Liberty fabrics, with some Moda solid pink thrown in there for good measure.

It needs a border, because it's only a wee quilt top so far.  I just kept making blocks until I ran out of scraps and this is what I ended up with.

There is one problem, however....

CHUNKY!

BULKY!!

I am thinking that I will need to get a long-arm quilter to quilt in the ditch along these really bulky seams, so I can then go ahead and do my hand quilting inside the white stars.  There is no way my little Janome could handle these seams!  It could barely manage piecing them together!  I am hoping quilting in the ditch will help flatten it out a little.

Any other suggestions?

Gorgeous quilt Sarah, love the colours. Do you have a friend with a strong sewing machine? My old Janome would stitch right over the top of them with the right size needle in it, tho it has been known to break a few needles doing that!! xo

The colours and design are amazing Sarah! They really 'pop'. I think anyway you quilt it, it will still look great. I'm guessing the more quilting close together the better in terms of stitching it all down flat.

Beautiful Quilt!! My suggestion, since I am a long arm quilter, definitely press the seams open. It will lay down much flatter and will be easier to quilt in your machine or for a long armer to quilt.

trim away a little at the points too... you often have longer bits where they all join. Looks really cute!!

Hi Sarah Sometimes I can get my seams to behave by giving them a spray of water and pressing them open. Your quilt is great! I love the block.

Gorgeous quilt Sarah. I'm with the others on all their suggestions... I always press seems open when there's going to be an intersection of more than 4 seams and the result is quite smooth then. The quilt looks really different to the runner too.
