Kenzie's Quilt

This quilt (only in quilt top form so far...) is for a friend of mine's baby who is turning one next week. I had actually started working on this quilt about 6 months ago, but it took an invitation to her first birthday party to kick me into gear! The large solid blocks in the middle section of the quilt are made with fabric from a blouse Kenzie's Mum gave me around the time of Kenzie's birth. It didn't fit her well, and I loved the fabric, so she gave it to me. Unfortunately it didn't sit well on me either, but I loved the fabric so much I couldn't part with the blouse. Then I came up with the idea of using it in a quilt for Kenzie.

In order to make use of the fabric I had to back it with a stabilizer, as it was so fine. I thought I had enough squares of it to make a 7 x 7 block square quilt, but as you can see, I didn't. I thought the quilt needed filling out, as the 5 x 7 blocks looked too small, so I added the pin wheels to two of the four borders. The dots are Michael Miller and the yellow fret work fabric is Heather Bailey (such a beautiful feeling fabric!). I have chosen the same fret work print, but in pink, for the binding, and a Kaffe Fassett fabric for the backing.

This quilt is a little unusual, but I hope she likes it!  I still have to pin it, quilt it and bind it all before I go to Melbourne for three days on Wednesday because the birthday party is on Saturday morning!
